What Does OM Really Mean?

This is the first painting of Babaji in which I put an “OM” sign. Somehow it happened that I ended up with a canvas that was 120CM tall and 60CM wide….twice as tall as wide, a proportion I do not use very often. So I had a lot of space either at the top or the bottom….and nearby was a brass “OM” sign standing up on the altar. So that seemed to be the right fit in the space above the head….Babaji in meditation in this case.

“OM” is the root sound, the “first word” uttered out of the “Mouth of God” to precede the whole universe. What exactly does it mean? It is like the words “GOD” or “LOVE”…. words that almost defy definition, but nevertheless play a major part in our human endeavors.

“OM” and “GOD” are two words almost synonymous, however “OM” is more of the infinite manifestation….”GOD” is the Thought behind the Form. “OM”, therefore, is “GOD” made manifest. So we would also call that the “Divine Mother”, or the aspect of the Divine that has actual physicality.

BABAJI, the perfect YOGI, has unified the THOUGHT of Who He is as GOD created Him with the FORM of His incarnation. He is the THOUGHT of GOD in the FORM of OM. So we say OM NAMAH SHIVAY when we honor Him and His LIFE FORCE. He destroys our ignorance of separation, the ignorance that divides spirit from form. We are all GOD in the form of OM. So when we say “OM”….it is like reciting our Name in God,  in our actual pure state of BEING unified in spirit and form.

So here is the painting I did in Brazil of BABAJI with “OM”….the one symbol of His True FORM…..manifested as a THOUGHT of GOD….just like our True FORM is manifested as a THOUGHT of GOD.

HOLY GRAIL

“THE GRAIL”

I painted this in my studio in Philadelphia around 2002. For quite a while I was working with the “X” as a compositional structure; aso a strong central and vertical axis. This painting is done with acrylics on four canvases bolted together. It’s overall size is roughly 6 & 1/2 feet wide and 5 & 1/2 feet tall. “The Grail”

Verticality is what drinking the Divine gives us, a sense that we are related to higher forces above that cannot be fathomed with the body’s senses. I suppose the real HOLY GRAIL is a realization that we are timeless beings, immortal beings, in a short act called “this incarnation”. “The Grail” is one of my drinks of Divine that imbibes in a kinesis of color. I remember showing my teacher, Tara Singh, this painting and he said, “Wow, you really captured it!”…meaning the Grail energy beyond thought.

Quan Yin…is the epitome of stillness. Even small sculptures of the Goddess placed in your home can bring a space to stillness and quiet. Just meditate on Her form, and you will begin to calm down and experience a relief from the pressures of work and pursuing desires. In Her, wanting comes to an end.

“The Seated Goddess in Total Relaxation”

We have this miniature sculpture of Quan Yin on the altar to the Divine Mother in our living room. She holds the space for our apartment to be a haven of quietude. She gives solace in the midst of activity, a stillness in the movement of daily living.

These are a series of water colors with colored pencil on Arches Aquarella water color paper…the finest grade of 100 % cotton rag. It is exquisitely smooth paper, and these are all 18 x 26 CM, or 7″ X 10″….small but sweet.

WHAT ARE WE DOING HERE?

“ART LOOK” with Markus Ray is an interactive web log dedicated to ART, the LOOK-ing at ART, mostly at visual ART…PAINTINGS & PHOTOS…as well at the “inner visuals” discovered by LOOK-ing with the mind in the reading of POEMS.

It is designed to involve the LOOK-ers with an opening in their VISION. It is our deepest and highest desire at “ART LOOK” to raise the consciousness of the viewer into greater states of JOY and well BEING.  The purpose of all ART is to UPLIFT and INSPIRE….and by LOOK-ing at ART, if you are not uplifted and inspired, then the artist did not do a proper job, or you have not stretched your mind adequately to take in the vision being given.

“ART LOOK” is educational, in the sense that it teaches and inspires us in the ART of LOOK-ing. As in any ART, it becomes mastered by PRACTICE. The real ART of seeing is a inner action of merging and connection of the “see-er” with what is “seen”. It is a communion of sorts, a getting inside the qualities of what is being “LOOK-ed” at.

Beauty and truth are qualities of real ART. We want to LOOK at them here at “ART LOOK”. There are other fine qualities too, but those are two of the highest ones.

It is our sincerest wish to inspire and uplift you. If you feel PURE JOY, even for  a second by LOOK-ing here at ART, then we consider our job worthy of the effort. And in that process of doing our job, we hope to inspire and uplift ourselves.

It is a journey we “take together” to the heart of our being. It is a true SERVICE. As Henry David Thoreau said, “The greatest service a man can do for his fellow men is to rise to the height of his own BEING.” So we want to rise to that height and bring you along with us.

At “ART LOOK”, this is our highest goal. We endeavor though ART to just LOOK at our real SELF….of TRUTH AND BEAUTY….and accept the remarkable BEING we are….WHO embodies these qualities and arrives at an immense inner JOY!

I painted this a number of years ago….around 2002….but it was a pivotal work in my evolution. Verticality was very much on my mind….and relating to the Divine. Also color….I wanted to make it as bright as I could…as if the painting would have an “inner glow.” I think I achieved it here….in this “house of God” I call Valhalla.

Recently I have taken on the surname of my wife, Sondra Ray, instead of my old surname….Sullivan. So I feel refreshed with a new beginning. Also this feels symbolic of the shift that will help our planet begin to honor the Divine Feminine that sustains all LIFE.
