Sri Muniraj was left in charge of the Haidakhan Samaj when Babaji took Samadhi in 1984. He faithfully maintained this leadership until last year, 2012, when he took Samadhi of his own. I painted this of him in Herakhan during this Spring’s Navaratri. The painting resides currently in the collection of Uday and Retu Chatterjee of Deradhun, India.

is a depiction of the god Shiva as the cosmic dancer who performs his divine dance to destroy a weary universe and make preparations for the god Brahma to start the process of creation. I photographed this one in a shop in Ubud, BALI….which I thought was quite delicate. I liked the way He is taming, holding and at the same time dancing on a cobra….
As you know the cobra is a revered creature in India…and considered more of a sacred friend than a foe. In fact, Shiva is often depicted with a cobra around His neck. So it is no accident that at Babaji’s ashram there are some of these “necklaces” around…. like this one Ms. Sondra is wearing, providing quite a fashion statement.

…. is one of the most spectacular pieces of sculpture in the world. Over a thousand years old, these ancient sculptures by masters of the heroic age in India fill a temple, literally carved into the side of a mountain on an island, called Elephanta, in the bay of Mumbai (formerly Bombay)
My teacher and friend Tara Singh took me there in the year 2000. The moment I stepped into this space I was transformed into another vibration, another world of Spiritual Intimacy. This head sculpture, about six meters tall, is the main focal point in the temple, which is carved in ONE PIECE, by the way…..not put together in parts, like Western Temples. It is the HEAD OF LORD SHIVA…..in His three manifestations: on the left is the masculine “destroyer”…on the right is the more feminine “maintainer”, and in the center is the androgynous epitome of “stillness”…..pure meditation.
When I returned to the USA this head of Shiva was on my mind…..as though it had been seared into my consciousness. I could not stop thinking about it, until finally I had to paint my own version of it from memory. This painting below is roughly 120CM X 150 CM, or 4 X 6 Feet. But I consider it, for myself, in a totally different dimension beyond normal thought, which cannot be measured.

I painted these together in London a week ago….before I was even finished with them a lady in the seminar, Valentina, came up to me and wanted to buy them…. Babaji always knows where he wants to go…. It was a perfect match. After she had the paintings all bundled up, and was about to go back to her home in Amsterdam, she said to me, “Now that I have these, I know I will never be alone.” I am so happy and grateful these paintings can have such a spiritually deep effect on people….THANK YOU BABAJI and AMMACHI for your blessings. ALEX GREY is absolutely fabulous. He is a cross between a Visionary, Artist, Anatomist, Alchemist, Shaman, Priest of the Universal HIGH ROAD, and Medical Illustrator. In fact there is no category for him except to say his images are unforgettable. They lift us up into realms that are both into the body, literally, and beyond it it terms of a spectral nirvana. My Teacher in Painting, Julian Stanczak, who studied with Joseph Albers at Yale, is the only other I know who had that transcendent a color sense. THANK YOU Alex for your vision.
